The Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre (SIRC) in Nepal experienced a significant COVID-19 outbreak in August 2020 among individuals with spinal cord injuries. The hospital faced challenges due to its open ward setting, crowded facilities, and the need for caregivers to stay with patients, increasing the risk of transmission. Despite implementing various preventive measures, including screening, masking, and hygiene protocols, the virus spread, leading to the conversion of the rehabilitation center into a COVID-19 isolation center.
Hospitals, especially rehabilitation centers, need comprehensive pre-outbreak plans and protocols to quickly adapt and respond to infectious disease outbreaks.
Consistent physical distancing, hand hygiene, and PPE use are crucial to prevent the spread of infections in high-risk settings like rehabilitation centers.
Dedicated isolation facilities that are fully accessible for individuals with specific needs, such as those with SCI, are essential to reduce the risk of further spread within healthcare centers.
