Spinal cord injury (SCI) impairs neuronal control of respiratory muscles and in turn respiratory function. Respiratory complications remain one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among individuals with SCI. Two specific training modalities that have been clinically evaluated are exercise training and inspiratory muscle training (IMT).
Exercise training may offer a strong clinical tool for the management of people with SCI and at least should be encouraged for the maintenance of general cardiorespiratory health in this population.
A larger and more robust RCT in a SCI population is needed to confirm the therapeutic potential of IMT.
Parameters to optimize IMT are only available for people with other respiratory conditions, namely COPD.
