The study aimed to determine if bladder irrigation with saline, acetic acid, or neomycin-polymyxin could reduce bacteriuria in people with neurogenic bladder who use catheters. Participants irrigated their bladders twice daily for 8 weeks, and researchers checked their urine for bacteria levels, pH, and antibiotic resistance. The study found that none of the irrigation solutions significantly reduced bacteria levels or inflammation in the bladder.
Bladder irrigation should not be routinely used to treat asymptomatic bacteriuria in catheterized patients with neurogenic bladder.
Future studies should investigate increased irrigant volume, frequency, and treatment duration.
Avoidance of routine bladder irrigation with antimicrobials can help prevent the development of antimicrobial resistance.
