This paper explores the experiences of three individuals with tetraplegia in Belgium who requested euthanasia. It highlights the importance of open dialogue and consideration of all options in end-of-life care for individuals with SCI. The cases suggest that a well-regulated and strictly controlled legal framework for euthanasia can provide added value to the care of individuals with SCI, offering them a sense of control and peace of mind. The legal framework in Belgium allows individuals to request euthanasia if they experience constant and unbearable physical or mental suffering that cannot be alleviated, provided their request is well-considered, voluntary, sustainable, and repeated.
The findings underscore the importance of integrating end-of-life discussions and options into the care plans for individuals with SCI.
Legal frameworks for euthanasia, when implemented with prudence, can empower patients to make informed decisions about their lives and deaths.
Complex cases involving euthanasia requests necessitate a collaborative approach involving various healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive assessment and support.
