This study looked at factors related to getting regular dental care in people with spinal cord injuries (SCI). Good oral health is important for overall health, but there's not much information about dental care after SCI. The study used data from 348 people with SCI. They looked at things like demographics, injury details, and other health conditions to see what was linked to regular dental care. The study found that over 60% of the participants received regular dental care twice a year, and 71% had seen a dentist within the past year. Factors like being female, employed, having more education, and private insurance were associated with getting regular dental care.
Develop interventions targeted toward men, unemployed individuals, those with lower educational attainment, and those without private insurance to improve dental care access and utilization.
Implement training programs for caregivers to properly care for the teeth of individuals with SCI.
Advocate for accessible and affordable dental care options, including dentists experienced in treating people with SCI and wheelchair-accessible dental offices.
