Obesity may contribute to increased intracranial pressure through hormonal mechanisms or direct pressure effects. Obesity-related increases in intra-abdominal, intrathoracic, and central venous pressures may directly cause increased intracranial pressure. IIH is likely a heterogeneous condition with various potential causes, including obesity as a risk factor or sufficient cause in some cases.
Effective means of preventing or treating obesity would undoubtedly have an impact on the prevention and treatment of IIH.
Consider IIH in obese patients with headache even without papilledema.
Further study of cerebral and CSF volumes in IIH could provide more insight.
