Spinal cord injury can significantly impact a person's ability to achieve physical and emotional intimacy, but there are ways to maximize sexual ability and quality of life after such an injury. Education and resources regarding sexual concerns are often lacking in acute rehabilitation settings, which can negatively affect a person's self-esteem and sense of value as a sexual being. The level and completeness of the spinal cord injury are major determinants of sexual functioning, affecting reflexive and psychogenic arousal, as well as the ability to experience erections, ejaculation, and orgasm.
Healthcare providers should prioritize comprehensive sexual education and counseling during spinal cord injury rehabilitation to address the often-overlooked needs and concerns of patients.
Encourage and facilitate the active involvement of partners in the rehabilitation process to promote open communication, experimentation, and mutual satisfaction.
Adopt a holistic approach to care that considers not only physical function but also psychological well-being, relationship dynamics, and cultural factors to improve overall sexual health and quality of life for individuals with spinal cord injury.
