The study investigated whether low-dose corticosteroids, commonly used for COVID-19 treatment in China, affected the time it takes for the virus to clear from the body. Researchers analyzed data from 78 COVID-19 patients, dividing them into general and severe groups, to account for differences in baseline characteristics and treatment. The study found that low-dose corticosteroid treatment did not significantly delay viral clearance in either the general or severe COVID-19 patient groups.
Low-dose corticosteroids can be considered as part of COVID-19 treatment without the concern of delaying viral clearance.
There is a need for well-designed, large-scale RCTs with longer follow-up durations to confirm the findings.
Clinicians need to consider individual patient severity and health status when determining treatment strategies involving corticosteroids.
