Manualization of a complex occupational therapy intervention is crucial for ensuring treatment fidelity in both clinical and research settings. It is essential for assuring trustworthiness and replicability of randomized controlled trials (RCT’s). Treatment manuals provide structure for an intervention’s delivery, enable consistent delivery by different therapists, facilitate staff training, and allow treatment replication in different contexts. The optimal solution may be to create manuals that, although structured, allow for individualization and for responsiveness to ever changing life circumstances and narratively described patient experiences.
Manualization ensures the intervention is delivered as intended, promoting consistent and reliable outcomes.
Manuals facilitate effective training programs, ensuring therapists understand and can implement the intervention effectively.
Detailed manuals allow for replication of the intervention in different contexts, strengthening the evidence base for occupational therapy practices.
