This study aimed to determine which tools are best for measuring sexuality and fertility in people with spinal cord injuries (SCI). An expert panel reviewed existing measurement tools to see how well they work for this population. The panel looked at tools for both male and female sexual function, as well as male and female reproductive function. They identified the most frequently used tools over the past 5 years and assessed them critically. The panel concluded that the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) are good choices for clinical trials. They also recommended vaginal pulse amplitude (VPA) for lab studies and assessment of ejaculatory capacity and semen quality for male fertility potential.
The FSFI and IIEF are recommended for use in clinical trials aiming to improve sexual function after SCI.
Vaginal pulse amplitude (VPA) is an appropriate measure for laboratory studies of female sexual responses.
Assessment of ejaculatory capacity and semen analysis are recommended for evaluating male fertility potential after SCI.
