This study aimed to see if early MRI scans can predict how well someone recovers from a traumatic cervical spinal cord injury. Researchers looked at MRI scans and neurologic exams of 30 patients, both shortly after the injury and six months later. The study found that the type of MRI pattern (edema vs. mixed) and how much of the spinal cord was affected could help predict recovery, especially below the level of the injury.
Early MRI can help predict the extent of neurologic recovery below the injury level.
MRI findings can guide the development of tailored rehabilitation programs based on the expected recovery potential.
MRI results can provide more realistic expectations for patients and their families regarding neurologic outcomes.
