This article discusses noninvasive methods to help patients with muscle weakness or spinal cord injuries breathe better. These methods can prevent lung problems and avoid the need for a tracheostomy. Noninvasive ventilation (NIV) and mechanically assisted coughing (MAC) are key techniques. NIV uses a mask or mouthpiece to deliver air, while MAC helps clear lung secretions. Electrophrenic pacing (EPP) or diaphragm pacing (DP) can also assist breathing, especially for high-level SCI patients, by stimulating the diaphragm muscle.
Effective noninvasive management can decrease the need for hospital admissions related to respiratory complications.
Avoiding tracheostomies and prolonged intubation enhances the patient's comfort and overall quality of life.
By preventing respiratory failure and the need for invasive procedures, healthcare resources can be used more efficiently.
