The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacts individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) due to their unique medical and mobility concerns. There are reports of limited access to protective materials, caregiver services, and medical supplies for SCI patients in several countries. The SCI community is collaboratively addressing these challenges through guidance, resource sharing, and telemedicine.
Advocacy groups must continue to fight against disability-based discrimination in healthcare access during emergencies.
The increased adoption of telehealth should be maintained and expanded to improve access to care for SCI patients beyond the pandemic.
Continued data collection on COVID-19 in persons with SCI is crucial to learning from the current situation and improving future responses.
