The primary goals of nursing care for individuals with spinal cord injuries include preventing secondary complications, maximizing functional recovery, supporting the individual and their family, and educating them on all aspects of care needed to maintain their well-being. Patients with spinal cord injuries often require a long hospital stay and close supportive relationships with staff. The psychological trauma can be profound, with patients experiencing fear, mood swings, and frustration. Rehabilitation milestones, such as transitioning to a wheelchair and first outings, can be stressful. Continuing support is necessary for a few years to help patients adjust to their changed lifestyle.
Implement comprehensive nursing protocols to minimize secondary complications and improve functional outcomes.
Develop and integrate psychological support programs to address the emotional and psychological needs of patients and their families.
Provide thorough education and training for both patients and healthcare staff to ensure proper long-term management of spinal cord injuries.
