This study examines if disseminating a clinical practice guideline (CPG) improved care for neurogenic bowel management in adults with spinal cord injury (SCI). It also checks if targeted implementation strategies could further improve adherence to these guidelines. The study found that simply distributing the CPG did not change provider adherence. However, using a targeted implementation plan did increase adherence to some of the CPG recommendations. The researchers used standardized documentation templates and patient-mediated interventions to improve provider-perceived barriers to implementing the guidelines.
Targeted implementation strategies are needed to effectively translate clinical practice guidelines into improved provider adherence and patient care.
Standardized documentation tools can facilitate better adherence to guidelines by addressing barriers related to documentation.
Additional research is needed to explore the effectiveness of interventions and medications for neurogenic bowel management.
