This study explores the perspectives of rehabilitation professionals in India regarding the psychosocial needs of family caregivers (FCGs) of persons with spinal cord injuries (PwSCI). It identifies key areas where caregivers require support, aiming to inform the development of tailored interventions. The research highlights that FCGs often face challenges in managing their own well-being while caring for PwSCI. This includes informational, psychological, and personal care needs, as well as financial, social, and vocational support. Ultimately, this study seeks to bridge the gap in understanding the unique needs of FCGs in the Indian sociocultural context. By doing so, it aims to facilitate the creation of effective, need-based support systems that improve the quality of life for both caregivers and PwSCI.
The study's findings can be used to design need-based, customized psychosocial interventions for family caregivers of persons with spinal cord injuries in India.
Multiple stakeholders involved in spinal cord injury management should understand the importance of meeting the needs of family caregivers and the timely delivery of customized psychosocial interventions.
As per experts’ perspectives, policy-level interventions would then be initiated to meet some of the needs of the FCGs.
