This study explores the strategies healthcare providers use to help individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) manage their weight. It focuses on the perspectives of these providers regarding effective weight management techniques for SCI patients. The research involved interviewing 25 SCI providers from various disciplines across multiple hospitals. The interviews aimed to identify common strategies and approaches used in weight management for individuals with SCI. The study highlights the importance of personalized care, a collaborative team approach, and the integration of patient preferences and goals in weight management plans for individuals with SCI.
Healthcare providers should intentionally integrate weight management strategies into clinical practice, consistently addressing goals and incorporating patient preferences.
Building rapport and tailoring treatment plans can significantly improve patient adherence and success in weight management programs.
Healthcare teams should ensure consistent messaging and actively involve dietitians, caregivers, and family members to create a supportive environment for weight management.
