This article discusses the challenges of rehabilitating patients with neglected spinal cord injuries (SCI) in rural Malaysia, where limited resources and unique personal and environmental factors can hinder successful recovery. The case presented is a 46-year-old man with paraplegia due to a fall 17 years prior, who received inadequate initial treatment and developed multiple complications. His rehabilitation was affected by his poor education, lack of family support, limited access to healthcare, and other socioeconomic issues. The study emphasizes the importance of early spinal rehabilitation and awareness among rural communities and healthcare authorities to improve policies, services, and programs that support individuals with SCI.
Telemedicine and improved rural healthcare facilities can provide specialty care for SCI patients.
Implementation of policies and programs that address the specific needs of SCI patients in rural areas, including housing assistance and vocational training.
Promoting community support and awareness to empower people with SCI and encourage their participation in society.
