Heterotopic ossification (HO) is when bone forms in soft tissues where it shouldn't, often after injuries, and can limit movement. It's a concern for spinal cord injury patients. SPECT/CT imaging helps doctors see how active the bone formation is. This is important for planning surgery to remove the HO and predicting if it will come back. This study used SPECT/CT to look at HO in the hips of patients with spinal cord injuries to see how metabolically active the HO was.
SPECT/CT can help surgeons determine the optimal timing for HO resection by assessing the maturity and activity of the lesion.
Identifying patients at higher risk of relapse after surgery allows for more targeted postoperative interventions, such as radiotherapy.
Early diagnosis and evaluation of HO can lead to improved rehabilitation outcomes and reduced morbidity for patients with spinal cord injuries.
