This study explores using billing codes from electronic medical records to assess the functional status of children in inpatient rehabilitation. Expert clinicians ranked billing codes based on their relevance to patient functional status in self-care, mobility, and cognition/communication. The study found that expert clinicians' code selections aligned with statistical modeling, supporting the use of billing data to create a Pediatric Functional Status e-Score (PFSeS).
A PFSeS based on billing data can enhance researchers' ability to evaluate the functional status of children undergoing inpatient rehabilitation for neurological conditions.
The study validates the use of billing data to model functional status, potentially aiding in identifying appropriate interventions and tracking patient progress.
The development of PFSeS will allow researchers to build outcome measurement that can be applied to data beyond the limited number of children who do receive inpatient rehabilitation.
