This study explored solutions to improve the prevention of secondary health conditions in people with spinal cord injury. The study involved interviews with therapists and people with spinal cord injury at a public rehabilitation hospital. The main theme was access to adequate health care. Categories included availability of health services, patient-centred care, strengthening rehabilitation care, access to resources and training health professionals. The study suggests that providing adequate access to health care is central to preventing and managing secondary health conditions for people with spinal cord injury.
Integrate rehabilitation services at all levels of healthcare to improve access to preventive care and resources for individuals with SCI.
Enhance training for health professionals on patient-centered care, biopsychosocial approaches, and the importance of health maintenance and preventative care.
Strengthen community-based outreach services and home-based care to provide continuity of care and enhance patient support post-discharge.
