This study tested a model describing motivation to engage in pain management behaviors (i.e., “readiness to change”) in adults with spinal cord injury. This model could potentially aid clinicians in their conceptualization of the factors that affect patient motivation to manage pain. The purpose of this study was to test the Motivational Model of Pain Self-Management in a sample of adults with spinal cord injury related pain.
Motivation or readiness to change behavior may be a useful target for interventions designed to increase adaptive coping responses.
Readiness to change may be influenced using approaches that target perceived importance and/ or coping self-efficacy directly, such as Motivational Interviewing.
Clinical trials and interventions based directly on the Motivational Model of Pain Self-Management are warranted.
