This study investigates whether a shoulder training machine, designed for able-bodied individuals, can be used by people with spinal cord injuries who use wheelchairs. Eleven participants with paraplegia performed a series of shoulder exercises using the machine. Researchers recorded the wheelchair positions, exercise difficulty, and any muscle imbalances. The results showed that the machine required adjustments for paraplegic users, and some exercises needing torso rotation were difficult. The study suggests a template for wheelchair positioning for optimal training.
Manufacturers of shoulder training equipment should consider adaptations for wheelchair users.
Rehabilitation programs should carefully consider exercises requiring torso rotation for SCI patients.
Clinicians can use wheelchair positioning data as a template for shoulder training programs.
