After a spinal cord injury (SCI), bone density can decrease rapidly, leading to fractures, especially around the knee. Bisphosphonates are drugs that might help prevent this bone loss. This study reviewed existing research on using bisphosphonates in SCI patients to see how well they prevent bone loss. The review found several small studies, but the evidence wasn't strong enough to recommend using bisphosphonates routinely. More research is needed to determine if bisphosphonates can effectively prevent fractures in SCI patients. Future studies should focus on specific groups and measure fracture outcomes directly.
Future research should focus on specific SCI populations (acute vs. chronic) to minimize heterogeneity and improve the reliability of results.
Adoption of uniform bone density measurement sites and rigorous quality control is crucial for comparing outcomes across studies.
Future studies should prioritize the assessment of fracture outcomes to determine the clinical relevance of bisphosphonate use in SCI patients.
