This editorial provides an overview of current research on coma and disorders of consciousness (DoC), highlighting the challenges and the need for innovative treatments. The editorial emphasizes the importance of accurate diagnosis, timely rehabilitation, and the use of neuromodulation techniques to improve outcomes for patients with DoC. Ethical considerations in managing severe brain injury and communicating with patients' families are also addressed, advocating for a multidisciplinary approach to patient care.
Implementing standardized neurobehavioral assessments can lead to earlier and more accurate diagnoses of DoC, facilitating appropriate treatment strategies.
Timely and intensive rehabilitation interventions should be prioritized to maximize functional recovery in DoC patients.
Future research and clinical practice should focus on developing targeted and personalized neuromodulation therapies, such as tDCS and TMS, to improve treatment effectiveness for DoC.
