This study looked at how long Klebsiella pneumoniae, a type of bacteria, can live in the bodies of men with spinal cord injuries. The study found that Klebsiella could stay in the patients' bodies for up to 55 days, especially in those with more severe injuries. The bacteria were often found in the patients' urinary systems, and it appeared that bacteria from the skin and bowel could move into the urinary system.
Enhanced hygiene protocols, especially for quadriplegic patients, may help reduce Klebsiella colonization.
Focus on perineal care and management of urinary drainage systems to prevent Klebsiella transmission.
Investigate the specific factors that contribute to Klebsiella colonization in quadriplegic patients.
