Neuropathic pain is a common and debilitating complication following spinal cord injury (SCI), impacting sleep, rehabilitation, and overall quality of life. A new Canadian clinical practice guideline offers evidence-based recommendations for managing neuropathic pain in SCI patients undergoing rehabilitation. The guideline promotes standardized assessment, diagnosis, and management of neuropathic pain, addressing inconsistencies and gaps in clinician knowledge and training.
The guideline offers clinicians a standardized approach to evaluating and managing neuropathic pain, leading to better and more consistent care for SCI patients.
Using the International Spinal Cord Injury Pain classification promotes effective communication among healthcare providers, ensuring accurate and consistent documentation of pain.
The guideline identifies key areas where further research is needed, focusing on specific treatments and factors influencing treatment response in SCI patients.
