People with spinal cord injuries often use wheelchairs for many years, leading to potential secondary injuries and reduced independence. This study examines how a special handrim called the Natural-Fit handrim affects symptoms and function in wheelchair users with upper extremity pain. The Natural-Fit handrim is designed to be more ergonomic, potentially reducing strain and pain in the hands and wrists. The study surveyed 87 people who purchased these handrims to see if they experienced improvements in their symptoms and ability to perform daily activities. The results showed that many participants reported improvements in upper extremity symptoms, ease of wheelchair use and function. Using the rims for a longer time was linked to easier wheelchair pushing and less pain in the hands and wrists.
Implementing wheelchair modifications like the Natural-Fit handrim early may help prevent or minimize symptoms and maintain independence for a longer time.
The ergonomic design of the Natural-Fit handrim can reduce strain on the upper extremities, leading to improved comfort, efficiency, and reduced pain for wheelchair users.
Wheelchair configurations, including handrim selection, should be personalized based on individual needs and functional abilities to optimize comfort, efficiency, and reduce the risk of secondary complications.
